1. WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE EVENT?

The management of natural water resources will be one of the priorities of the future territorial co-operation objective (the successor of the INTERREG Community initiative) of the European structural funds for 2007-2013.

In light of the new round of structural funding, the Cycleau Partnership will hold this event in Quimper, Finistère, France, on 12-13 October 2006, focusing on the European dimension of river catchment management. The main objective is to encourage a learning culture and sharing know how among regions of Europe. It will also be an opportunity for Cycleau to disseminate lessons learnt on the management of European projects and showcase its final outputs

The previous Cycleau Conferences held on 7-8 October 2004 in Ballina, Co.Mayo, Ireland  and on 22-23 September 2005 in Falmouth, Cornwall, UK, were very successful  and involved over 450 people in total from 14 different countries across Europe and beyond.

2. WHO ARE THE ORGANISERS AND WHAT IS THE PROJECT ABOUT?

Cycleau is a European partnership funded by the North West INTERREG IIIB programme, involving organisations in Ireland, the United Kingdom and France, which aims to:

  • Find innovative ways of managing and improving the water environment.
  • Share knowledge and experience of water management.
  • Involve local communities in the management of their local rivers.

The Cycleau approach is based on the water cycle and deals with whole river catchments as a single entity, from source to sea. Its objective is to form a shared, integrated approach to the planning and management of natural water resources in the coastal zone. At present, there is no common approach to this issue in Europe, even though it is a widespread problem in coastal areas.

The Cycleau Project aims to produce a roadmap that can be used by communities wishing to use best practice in environmental management. Although Cycleau will end in December 2006, its legacy will be a "quality brand", a methodology that will help communities best look after their own water environments.

3. WHO IS IT FOR?

  • Public authorities, NGOs, research institutes, local and regional authorities, local development and partnership bodies, community groups and any other bodies with an interest in integrated catchment management and water policies.
  • The conference should also be of interest more generally to anyone interested in partnership policies and techniques, the methods trialled and promoted during the event being transferable to many contexts involving participation by stakeholders and the public, as well as anyone interested in initiating European territorial co-operation projects.
